BOWLING.

Yesterday afternoon the bowling green presented a bright aod attractive appearance, a large gathering of bowlers and their friends assembling to welcome back tho representatives who did battle for tho three local clubs at the recent tournament. A match was arranged between tho representatives and other members of the club, and several interesting contests were witnessed. During the afternoon the President, Mr J. Harding, in an appropriate speech, welcomed the returned bowlers, pointing out that although they bad not brought tho championship honors to Gisborne, they had done their duty faithfully. He acknowledged the kindness of the residents of Palmerston North in the matter of the hospitality that they had extended towards the visitors, and thought

that a telegram should bo sent to the Palmerston Club from the local clubs conveying their thanks. Mr J. Ponsford, skip of the Gisborne team, said that the Palmerston people had spared no expense in regard to the entertainment of the visitors, and everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the outing. They could not expect to win the championship every year. Considering the fact that there were twenty-six teams competing for the honor it was really only once in a lifetime that one could expect to see it come to Gisborne. Mr bimson, skip of the Whataupoko team, attributed the non success of the teams to the fact that they had met better players. Mr Witty, speaking on behalf of the Kaiti Club, said that his men did not go away with the idea of winning the championship. They bad all benefited by tho instruction they had received, and the outing had been a most enjoyable one. The following are the details of the afternoon’s bowling :

A very interesting game was played at the Bowling Tournament on Saturday morning, between teams representing the Press and the Palmerston Club (says the Manawatu Daily Times). The Press was represented by Buick (Palmerston), Reeves (Wellington), Nash (Dannevirke), and Gaudin (skip) Gisborne, the local club by Batchelar, Watchorn, YouDg, and Russell (skip). Both taems were composed of tried men, and some excellent play resulted. At one stage of the game Palmerston had the lead, but putting on a seven, the Pressmen followed it up with a three and several singles, the final scores being—Press 32, Palmerston 22. The contest was a pleasant incident in a most enjoyable tournament.
