AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The first day of the Australasian Championships was brought off in fine weather, but a strong westerly wind interfered somewhat with the runners. It favored sprinlors, but in the back stretch handicapped distance men. The track has
not recovered from the recent rains, and was fairly hard. Under the circumstances the times put up in most of the events was good. In the 440 Championship Oxlade cnmo with a great rattle at the finish, and drew well away from the field. In the Three Mile Walk all the competitors but Barrett and Wilson dropped out. Theso two kept together till 200 yards from home, when Wilson spurted, and left Barrett standing, winning by fifty yards. In the Mile Bun Simpson ran wonderfully woll considering the track and wind, putting up the best time done in Australasia for several years, being 3-sth of a second outsido the New Zealand record. Ho smothered his field at the finish, and was loudly cheered for his performance. Smith won the 120 Hurdles from start to finish in the fastest Australasian time.
