AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The first day of the Australasian Championships was brought off in fine weather, but a strong westerly wind interfered somewhat with the runners. It favored sprinlors, but in the back stretch handicapped distance men. The track has

not recovered from the recent rains, and was fairly hard. Under the circumstances the times put up in most of the events was good. In the 440 Championship Oxlade cnmo with a great rattle at the finish, and drew well away from the field. Ovilly had a walk over in the shot putting, Madill not competing owing to the death of a relative, and is not likely to compete to-morrow in the hammer throwing. In the Three Mile Walk all the competitors but Barrett and Wilson dropped out. Theso two kept together till 200 yards from home, when Wilson spurted, and left Barrett standing, winning by fifty yards. In the Mile Bun Simpson ran wonderfully woll considering the track and wind, putting up the best time done in Australasia for several years, being 3-sth of a second outsido the New Zealand record. Ho smothered his field at the finish, and was loudly cheered for his performance. Smith won the 120 Hurdles from start to finish in the fastest Australasian time. This record will not stand, however, as a strong wind assisted the runners. The points for the Cham-, pionship now stand New Zealand three, New South Wales two, Victoria one. The attendance was moderate, over 1500 being present. The following are the results : 220 Yards. —First heat: Smith, New Zealand, 1; Keating. New Zealand, 2; Campbell. Queensland, 3. Oxlade also started. Won easily. Time, 23 2-5. Second heat: Moir, Victoria, 1; Henderson, New South Wales,, 2; Webster, New Zealand, 3. Edicott also started. "Won by two yards. The final will be run to-tnorrow. 600 Yards Flat Handicap ; Cbevis, Auckland (34yds), 1 ; Marriott, Auckland {lO.ydsj, 2 ; Mahony, Queensland (20yds), 3. Won by six yards. Time, 1.15. Broad jump: Hunter, Victoria, 20ft sAin, 1; McPherson, Victoria, 20ft lin, 2 ; Gardner, Victoria, 19ft 9 jin, 3 ; Harper, New Zealand, 18ft 3Ain. Five Miles’ Bicycle Handicap : Spragg, 100yds, 1: Thomas, 140yds, 2; Brook, 70yds, 3. A closo finish. Weight Putting: O’Beilly had a walk over: 41ft. 440vds Flat: Oxlade, New South Wales, 1; Webster, New Zealand, 2; Campbell, Queensland, 3. Won easily. Time 52 4 5. Three Mile Walk : AVilson, New Zealand, 1 ; Barrett, Arictoria, 2 ; Purbrick, Victoria, 3. Hickey and Barr-Brown, New Zealand, also started, but gave up. Time 22.21.
