MR PAGE’S TRAVELS
(Special to Timks.) Woffington, last night. Wellington’s Town Clerk, Mr 7. E. Page, returned yesterday after six months spent in England, chiefly on recreation purposes. At tho same time he has brought back a large amount of information on municipal matters useful to Wellington. Incidentally ho says municipal life is very active in England, particularly in largo manufacturing centres. The tramways, lighting, water supply, and even in some oases tho telephone system are all being acquired and worked by municipalities, with the confident expectation of a considerable reduction of rates. A.M.P. SOCIETY.
Benjamin Short, one of tho directors of tho Australian Mutual Provident Society, has arrived on a flying visit to Wellington. The Society broke all previous records, the aggregate business exceeding four and a quarter millions, aud there being a net gain in lives of every description of two and a half millions. The Society is launching out into a new branch of operations, undertaking among other things to act as trustee for members to the extent of their policies and accumulations. THE SURVEYOR-GENERAL.
Tlio Laud Board yesterday took leave of Mr .7. W. A. Marchaut, for many yearn Commissioner, aud recently appointed Surveyor-Goneral. The Board unanimously placed on record its appreciation of Mr Marchant’s services, and indicated that his good judgment, intimate knowledge of tho land laws of tho colony and the circumstances of sottlers, together with his intimate knowledge of the district, havo lightened tho labors of tho Board and largely reduced the difficulties incidental to pioneer settlement in the mountainous aud bush country. CO-OPERATION.
A Country Co-operativo Supply Federation has been formed huro with tho object of forming co-opurativo distributing stores for Wellington district. It is stated to be the outcome of the legitimate desire of certain consumers to start a trading concern of their own. Tho promoters are said to he in touch with tho farmers of the district, who have promised considerable support to federation in return for facilities for the disposal of their produce in colonial aud foreign markets.
