SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
TO MR JOHN WRIGHT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. The community was profoundly stirred when it became known that Mr John Wright, a member of the firm of Wright, Stevenson and Co., had been the victim of a terrible accident. While superintending some new machinery in the- firm’s bone manure depot near the wharf, lie was caught in tho belting, and before the machinery could be stopped ho was whirled at a great rate round tho shafting. JR- had both legs and one arm broken, besides his body being shookingly mutilated, llis wife is a daughter of Mr Greenwood, well-known in Christchurch. 11-- leaves two children.

Stephenson and Co., and son of one of rlu- founders of the firm, met with a shocking death to-day. He had been worrying for some time about a manure-mixing machine, and Chambers and Ban, who supplied the machinery, put or. a man to run it for a week. The elovat-or had become choked, and the.belfc driving it slipped off. Deceased went up i'ne ladder, but whether ho tried to replace tbe belt, or intended to wait till the elevator was cleaned, is not known. Somehow ho got caught in tho shafting, which was revolving at the rate of 150 revolutions per minute. He was carried round with the shaft. As tho latter was less than three feet below the beams his lower extremities struck tire beam with every revolution, aud tho body was terribly mangled before the engine could be stopped. Death was probably instantaneous. At tho inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. Deceased was very popular.among all classes, and the death caused a great shock. Most of tho business places displayed Hags at half-mast. He leavos a widow and several young children.
