The Liquor Question.
ITo the Editor of the Times.) Sir., —I was more than a little amused at your correspondent “ Fairplay ” as he comes to the rescue of the publicans compelled to spend thousands of pounds” to provide accommodation. YVho compels them? Is this outlay required in order to provide for the sale of liquor ? Is it not a fact that the bar trade goes on without interruption even while the house is beingtaken down '} They are no more compelled to put up new buildings than they are compelled to ask for a new license next year. To say that these houses would not be required for the accommodation of travellers is equal to saying that if there were no liquor sold there would be no other business done. Will someone kindly show us how this queer logic works out ? If men don’t spend money on liquor there will be no sale for boots and shoes. Funny, isn’t it 2 It’s as good as saying ‘‘lf we don’t buy a lot of stuff that we don’t need we won’t ba able to pay our debt®.’; Out of respect for your .space I refriun; from further remarks at present.—l am. etc., i'QVAti New Ze.MAM).
