Commandant Brand was severely wounded during the engagement at the Caledon river. Colonel Walter Kitchener's column has reached Yryheid. Commandant Schecpcr, who is ill, has been conveyed in a buggy southward towards Rivcrsdale. He narrowly escaped his pursuers, whose losses during the chase were two officers killed and two wounded. Dr Fielding, who volunteered to accompany the orderlies to succor the wounded at Italia, was compelled to attend the Boer wounded. The British remained in tile broiling sun all day without water, and only unskilled attendance, until Dr Kennedy’s arrival. Amongst 22 prisoners taken bv the British at Reitz was Pierre BeYtllie.-s, who last year persecuted 50 Britishers at llarrismith for refusing to be commandeered. The evidence adduced at the treason trials at Pretoria shows that many Boers who had sworn neutrality and were receiving British relief communicated with commandos still in the field. Over four thousand Boers attacked Forts Italia and l’rospcet. The British at the conclusion of the lighting buried three hundred aed thirtyt'.,o Boers. Tho Boers, in their attack on Fort Italia, fought and dodged ill their desperation, repeatedly changing trenches. The. enemy 's fire in the early part of 5 the fight damaged the two 15-pouuders and the Maxim.
