EXPECTORATION OX FOOTPATHS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. V food deal of correspondence has been published lately in regard to preventing expectoration on the streets, anu decreasin'' the spread of tuberculosis. The City Council has a bve-law on the subject, but it has remained a dead letter up to the present. This evening, however, the Council instructed the Bye-laws Com- j jiiittee to see that placards are erected in the streets, drawing people s attention to the existence of the bye-law. CITY ABATTOIRS. The Premier has informed the Mayor that the Government will provide the money for the city abattoirs, plans for which have been prepared. There is opposition by other local bodies to tne City Council’s control. ELECTRIC POWER. Tiie Mayor, and City Surveyor go to Wellington to-morrow evening to_ interview the Premier in regard to tne Wannakariri Empowering Bill, which will give the City power to take water fut* electric lighting and other purposes from the Waimakariri river. The Sieiwyn County Councii opposes tlie Bill, maintaining that it has sole right to the use oi the water the river. FALSE POSITION. The City Council passed a motion re. cording regret that the Mayor had been placed in a false position by Parliament in regard to the expenses in connection with the iioyal visit.

MOTOU i'IHE ENGINES. Xlic Eire Brigade Coinmittee of the City Council is obtaining information as to the advisability of using motor lire engines, doing away with horses for hauling engines to fires. THE CATHEDRAE. A fresh effort is being made to raise the necessary funds for the completion of the Cathedral. The erection of the transepts is being proceeded with, and considerable progress has already been made, hut sufli* cicnt money is not yet in hand to build the chancel also. Eor this purpose about X7OOU is required.
