By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The City Council has appointed a new Superintendent for the Fire Brigade—Mr Charles Alexander Woolley, who joined the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade under Captain Shaw, and has served in the South Australian Fire Brigade Board since June, 188 d.
The City Council last night resolved to frame a by-law to prevent expectoration on footpaths. It was pointed out that, as the result of an agitation by medical men of Sydney, a by-law with this object had been adopted by the Sydney City Council. Tho Wanganui Borough Council had adopted the by-law, and similar by-laws were in force all over America.
Wellington, last night. The Madgcburg Firo Insurance Company has decided to retire from New Zealand, and has effected re insurance of all its policies witli the London and Lancashire.
A slight earthquake occurred at 10.80 last night. The Defence Department is desirous of securing tho names of Now' Zealanders who served in corps raised in South Africa, in order to forward to them tho gratuity payablo by the War Office.
