TAEANAKI GIVES HAWKE’S BAY A SEVEKE DEUBBING.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Now Plymouth, last night. There was a largo attendance at the Hawke’s Bay-Taranaki match this afternoon. The visitors made a poor show, though they woke up in the last spell. O’Dowd kicked off for Taranaki. After short up and down play, in which McCarthy did good work for the visitors, Taranaki scored a try, but it was not converted. Give-and-take play ensued on each side, and in turns free kicks were obtained, but with no result. A fine piece of dribbling by O’Dowd resulted in a goal. After the kick out Taranaki got close to their opponents’ lino. Tho Hawke’s Bay forwards cleared the lines splendidly, but by dribbling rushes Taranaki scored a try. It was not converted, and shortly after the kick out tho Hawke’s Bay fullback was disabled. His place was taken by Waitai. Clifton made a splendid run, which resulted in an easy goal for Taranaki. It was quickly followed by another goal for the same team. Hawke’s flay then livened up, and scored a goal from a free kick. At half-time tho score was:— Taranaki 11 Hawke’s Bay 3
The visitors’ forwards quickly got on a dribbling rush, carrying all before them, but failed to scoro. Taranaki quickly retorted by scoring a goal, aftor smart passing, and then Taranaki had it all their own way to the finish, though they failed in several kicks at goal. On time boing called, tho score was : Taranaki 35 Hawke’s Bay 3 But for the over-eagerness of the Taranaki forwards, the score would have been larger. The backs gave an excellent display. Tho Hawko’s Bay backs were very poor, making no attempt to pass. Tho forwards made some good dribbling rushes. NEW SOUTH WALES AT LAST GETS A WIN. DEFEATS WANGANUI I3Y A POINT. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wanganui, last night. The football match Now South Wales against Wanganui was played this afternoon in splendid weather, and in the presence of a large number of people. The game resulted in a win for New South Wales by 9 to 3, all being made in the first spell. The play throughout was fast and interesting. Mr T. It. Cresswell was the referee.
