FATAL ACCIDENT.
[By Telegraph Press Association.] Now Plymouth, last night. Another railway fatality occurred here this afternoon, Major Brown, aged 81, being tho victim. Deceased had been buying fish near a crossing in Dovon street, and as tho outward train approached the stroet ho stepped across the line and was caught by tho engine. He was dragged for some distance. When he he was found to be dreadfully mutilated, having ono leg almost severed, the other broken, and every limb more or less damaged. The remains liavo been taken to the morgue to await an inquest on Wednesday. Deceased was an old settler here, having arrived in 1841. He was the first Superintendent of the Province, took a prominent part as officer in the Maori war. He was Representative several times in the House. Latterly he was a Justice of tho Peace, also Jan interpreter. Ho leaves a widow and several children, one boy being in South Africa. Great sorrow is being evinced for their loss, and there is much outcry at the danger of the crossing.
