By Telegraph— Press Association. Napier, last night. A single woman named Elizabeth Schmidt, aged 27, in service at Hastings, gavo birth to a child on Saturday. The infant was subsequently found smothered in her bod. The mother admits that the child was alive when born. A charge of murdering her infant is to be preferred against the woman.

Timaru, last night. A branch of the Farmers’ Union has been formed at Waimate. At a meeting of trades-union delegates on Saturday night to consider the formation of a South Canterbury Trades and Labor Council it was deoided to adjourn for a month, as several delegates had not received authority from their headquarters at Christchurch. The meeting then passed a resolution asking the Minister of Labor not to delete the clause in the Factories Bill regulating the hours of labor and overtime. Special reference was made to fellmonger and allied trades, and to the refusal of the Arbitration Court at Christchurch to make an award.

Dunedin, last night. The criminal calendar comprises eight eases, mainly of a minor character.
