FOOTBALL.

CANTERBURY V. SOUTHLAND.

[By Telegraph Pres 3 Association.] Invercargill, last night. The football match, Canterbury v. Southland, was won by the visitors by 12 points to 8. Rain fell from 3to 9 a.m., and the ground was a bit soft, but in fair order. Just as the match started a stiffish southerly breeze came up, and Southland, winning the toss, played with it. There was no score in the first spell. The style of play adopted by the visitors was disappointing, and voted antiquated. As the play went the sides were well matched up to the last seven minutes, the score then standing at 4 to 3. A goal kicked was from a mark by Harper, and a penalty goal by Jacobs. Then, after successfully staving off several attacks near their line, the visitors resumed the offensive, and Phillips got a try, and when Harper converted it their victory was assured. During the last minute Bush scored his try, being the finest piece of play of the match, and to Harper, who started the rush in midfield, belongs the credit. Two thousand people were present, but it is doubtful if a similar game would attract five hundred to-morrow. Canterbury was frequently penalised for off-side, but it was no deterrent, two of the forwards persistently infringing, and free kicks to Southland did not compensate fer the infringement,
