LATE SIR JOHN M’KENZIE.
IMPRESSIVE OBSEQUIES.
PROCESSION HEADED BY PIPE BANDS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. Tho funeral of the late Sir John McKenzie was the' largest ever seen in the district. The cortege was over a mile in length, and comprised about 75 vehicles, 40 horsemen, and 60 on foot. The procession travelled seven miles, from tho Heathficld residence of the McKenzie family to Palmerston South cemetery, where the interment took place.
The coffin was borne from the house to the hearse by the Hons. Seddon, HallJoues, Walker, Duncan, Carroll, and Mills, who performed a similar office from the hearse to tho graveside. The procession, headed by the Southland and Dunedin pipe bands, moved off at a slow pace, tho pipers playing laments.
After about a mile had been travelled tho pipers were accommodated in drags, but when within a couple of miles of the cemetery they resumed the march, and played dirges to tho cemetery. Tho Revs. Clark and Niccol conducted the Presbyterian service at tho graveside, tho scene being a most impressive one.
Representative men wore present from all parts of the colony, most of the public bodies in the Southern part of tho island being strongly represented, and there also being a good muster of legislators.
