"Boxers” Threaten Murder.

Sydney, July 8. A very lively gathering of Chinese was held last night. An important meeting had boon called by the Chinese reform party, and as it was feared that there would be a display of tho “ Boxer” party, the attendance of plain-clothes detectives was secured. There were nearly 500 Chinese present. Mr Yce Hung, one of the Chinese reform party, was voted to tho chair, and asked the meeting to preserve order, and endeavor, to conduct tho business in a proper European fashion, without which, he said, they could achievo nothing. Tho audience’s knowledge of European methods was immediately dis-

played by an uproar, and it was soon seen that a crowd of chattering celestials at the rear were acting in a threatening manner towards the members of the reform party. The rougher “ Boxer ” element had billets of wood up their capacious sleeves, and as the position was threatening, it was decided to call in tho police. Mr Yec Hung, chairman of the reform party, got up several times and tried to obtain a hearing, but he was howled down to the accompaniment of violent gestures and cries which in English meant : Bring him out and we will murder him, kill him, and down with the reform party. Matters were assuming a serious aspect, when a body of police appeared in the hall. The presence of the uniforms made a decided change, and tho leaders of the reform party declare that the police by their appearance on the scene prevented, bloodshed.
