DEBATE IN TIIE SENATE. CABLE TO BE LAID BY MARCH. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ' Melbourne, July 17. In the Senate the Postal Bill was taken in Committee. Mr Sargood moved an amendment to give senders of cables tho right to choose route for messages. Tho Postmaster-General showed his hand. As the Pacific cable would he laid by March next he said it must he secured against the competition of a private company. Mr Miller, New South Wales, declared that tho Government were seeking to build up a State monopoly, and might compel cablo users to pay it cxccssivo rates. However, the Labor party supported the Government. The Queenslanders and Tasmanians joined hands against tho Eastern Extension. The amendment was negatived.
