Considerable interest was taken in tho football match bet.voen the above-named clubs on Saturday afternoon, and despite the inclement state of the weather, there was a good attendance of the public, Heavy showers fell at intervals during the progress of the game, which added to the discomfiture of the onlookers, and also made the ball very difficult for tho players to handle with any degree of certainty. When the teams took tho field it was
found that both were short of some of
their best men, Brown, Murphy (2) and Newton being absent from the Kaiti team, whilst Baker, J. Gibson, Coekery, Harris and Riddell were missing from tho Huia ranks. Kaiti soon had their full comple-
ment of players, whilst Huia played ono man short for the first spell, after which they put on one of their junior players. Kaiti won the toss and elected to defend tho town goal, which was slightly favored by tho wind, whilst Huia defended tho seaward goal.
Huia kicked off, Kirk returning. From a scrum, Porter got possession, and carried play into Huia's 25. Huia wero awarded a freo kick, from which play centred. After a series of scrums and line-out play, Kaiti worked their way into Huia's 25, where Halbert made an unsuccessful pot
at goal, Iluia boing forced. From the kick-off Porter marked, and sent tho ball out close to the Huia goal line. A freo kick to Huia carried play to neutral territory. Huia removed play to the Kaiti
line, Kaiti being compelled to force. Shortly after resuming, Huia were awarded another free kick, Symes sending
the ball out at tho 25 flag. From an opon rush by tho Kaiti vanguard, in which Eaton and lloynolds wore prominent, tho ball wont out in Iluia ground. After soveral dribbling rushes up and down the Cold by the forwards of each team, a scrum was
formed near the Kaiti line, and Haetea securing possession of tho oval, dashed across tho line and scored. Symes failed to convert the try. Huia 3, Kaiti nil. On resuming, play centred. From a kick by McUrodio Porter marked, and Ngatai made a good attempt at goal, tho ball striking tho post, Ball kicking out at tho half-way flag. Huia forwards forced play into Haiti's 25, where it remainod for some time, and Kaiti being again penalised were forced. On kicking out a
number of serums took place in midfield, and tho ball going out of play half-time was called, the score being—-Huia 3, Kaiti nil.
Kirk kicked off for Kaiti, and from a good dribbling rush Huia soon bad tile ball closo to the Kaiti line. A good kick by McCrcdic sonfc tho ball out at tho centre flag. Huia wore not to be denied, and starting another dribbling rush, in which Witters, Caulton, and Ilaetao wore conspicuous, tlioy took tho ball over tho lino, the former scoring. Symes failed to convert. On resuming, after amcxchango of kicks between tho backs, Kaiti wero again penalised, tho ball going out centre. A good forward rush by Kaiti removed play close to the Huia goal, where Kaiti wore awarded a freo kick. Ngatai took the kick, but failed to convert, Iluia being forced. From the kick off a series of forward rushes took place, Ivaiti eventually being forced. Kaiti hero lost tho sorviecs of Kirk, who had beon playing a first-class game for his side. Ho collided with ono of his own men, and seriously injured his spine. Another .forward rush by tho Huia forwards again forced Ivaiti, time being called shortly afterwards, the game ending Huia 0, Kaiti nil. "Mr A. W. Rees had charge of tho wliisle, and gnvo every satisfaction, whilst Messrs 11. Maude and R. Colo made efficient lino umpires. JUNIOR MATCH—IIUIA v. WEST END. Tho above contest was quite as exciting as the senior fixture, and after an interesting game, West End proved victorious by 7 points to nil, ft potted goal and a try, both of which were scored by A. Hepburn. Mr W. Howard aoted ns referee.
