THE COOK ISLANDS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Lieut.-Colonel Gudgeon, British licsident at Ilaratonga, leaves here to-morrow for the Islands. He states that arrangements have been made by the Government for Hr S. Percy Smith (cx-Surveyor-General; to go down to the South Seas in the Government'' oil screw schooner Countess of Itanfurly, in order to initiate a new system of government under the British Hag on the recently Island of Niue (Savage Island). The government will bo by the natives under t he Itesident Agent. Hr Smith will stay on Niue for about three months and will have the opportunity there of pursuing his Polynesian researches. The schooner Countess of Itanfurly, which is expected to sail from here for Ilaratonga and other islands of the Cook group and Niue in about three I weeks’ time, will make regular trips to Niue.
