Auckland, last night. Mr Apirana Ngata, M.A., L.L.D., of the East Coast, and Mr Hone Heke, M-H.it., received a wire from the Hon. J. Carroll, requesting them to prepare all the Maori songs in connection with the recent hakas held at Rotorua. I learn that the Duke is particularly anxious to take a copy of them Homo, and so approached Mr Carroll. When Messrs Ngata and Heko have completed their part,. Mr will convert the Maori songs into English. In fact, he will supply His Highness with a full detailed account of the meaning of each song. DESERTED CORNERS. Among tho many Gisbornites who had their huias stolen by pakehas were Messrs Carroll and T. Halbert. Iluia foathors have been in great demand hero lately. AUCKLAND’S TRIUMPH. Under tho abovo heading, the Auckland Ilcrald gives a sub-leader congratulating Auckland on tho fact that it was easily first ; among New Zealand cities in tho matter of welcoming tho Duke and Duchess, j “ This is of course as it should be,” says tho Herald, "seeing that our City was not j merely their landing place, but is tho 1 largest ami tho most important. But tho 1 triumph is all the greator when wo ro- 1 member that for no City did tho general 1 Government do so littlo, and that in no other City did it in any way countermine tho efforts of the citizens. Tho fact Is that Auckland realised from tho commencement the difficulties in tho way of a ] satisfactory reception, and know, from its painful experiences, how little it need expect from tho Seddon Administration. Consequently it wasted no time in trying to obtain Government assistance, but q worked from the beginning in its own ] way and for its own credit." f FOOTBALL. I The Auckland Rugby Union have ap- S pointed Mr F. S. Murray as selector of , the representative teams during tho present season. The now selector is well known to footballers throughout tho j colony, having represented Auckland on f the football field from 1889 to 1899, be- j sides being included in the North Island , team of 1891, and the '9B and '97 New j Zealand teams. .
