THE CAMP SCANDAL.
POLE-PENTON UNDER THE WHIP. TO LEAVE IN OCTOBER, SOMEONE MAY GET HURT. (Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. It is stated that Colonel Pole-Penton will definitely leave the colony in October. The Post to-night strongly resents the language used, and concludes: “If our citizen army is to become a permanent institution, fit for the defence of the country, and inflamed with a steadfast spirit of enthusiasm, it must be led by men who will work hard and earnestly, not only direct tho volunteers aright, but first of all appreciate the spirit and character of the men with whom they have to deal. Plain khaki should bo tho only wear for commandant, staff, and private. Let crimson and gold and feathers, with all the other peacocky trappings so dear to foolish women and smart society, disappear, for they mostly only serve to minister to the vanity of arrogant incompetence ; and, if our volunteer system is to survive, let tho commandant avoid public or private denunciation of any of the men he controls as 1 infernal cowards,’ or ■ miserable curs.’ First, because the system will not bear the strain, and, secondly, becauso someone may get hurt.”
