Teachers’ Salaries.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. At tho Teachers’ Salaries Commission, Mrs Francis urged that tho mistresses of tho scparato'lnfants schools, apart from othor schools, should form a soparate grade. Under tho Ilondmastors’ proposal hor school would bo shut up, as out of 445 in it, thoro woro 163 who wore over seven yoars, and thoy woro not sufficiently' advanced to go to another school. The proposal of tho headmasters was actuated by a desire to incroaso thoir attendance undor tho now scale. Mr Bennett, headmaster at Karon, said that under the present system of teachors in Wellington district anomalies and injustices occurred. Tho salaries paid for largo Woffington schools under tho altornativo scalo woro more adequate than at present. Ho considered thoro woro too many pupil teachors in this district, and thoro would not bo employment for thoso now being trained for many years to como. Ho did not find any goneral demand for equal salaries for inon and womon, and if that principle was put into operation tho keener competition that would ensue must result in the breakdown of woman.
