FAIR AUCKLAND'S BLOT

AN ATTEMPT TO REMOVE IT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. A public meeting was held this afternoon by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, at the request of a number of business men, to consider the question of securing adequate and suitable fire appliances for the city. Mr D. R. Caldwell, President of the Chamber, trusted that some steps would be taken to see that the Council took action to wipe out thoblot—he might almost go as far as to say the criminal blot, that rested upon the city of Auckland in this matter.

Mr Fowlds, said that it was to be hoped those present would use their every endeavor to sec that the opportunity to place the city in a better position to cope with such a disaster as that which had just occurred would not bo allowed to pass, and he urged that everything should be done to plaee.Aucldand in a better position with regard to appliances. The City Council as a whole called for strong condemnation, but ho felt suro that there were among the members those who would be glad to have the support of such a meeting. He moved : “ That this meeting of citizens deplores the continued neglect of the City Council to take efficient measures for the protection of life and property from fire. It hereby appoints a deputation to wait on the City Council, and urges it to take immediate and effective action to remove the existing disgrace from the city.” After further discussion, during which the ex-Mayor(Mr Goldie) and some members replied to the adverse criticisms of other speakers, the motion was carried.
