SANITARY CONDITION OF TOWN.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —For a considerable time past there has been a good deal said about sanitary measures for our town ; but in all I have not heard of any proposal advocating the importance of reclaiming the mud banks on both sides of the Taruheru River.

I think that everyone will agree with me in saying that the oarrying out of such a schome would result in stamping out more fever germs than years of battling with main drains and side drains will do, unless the mud banks, lying as it were just under the town, are reclaimed. It is a scheme that would serve two purposes, viz., improve the sanitary condition of the town and recoup handsomely for the outlay.

The water scheme now before our Councillors is of vital importance, and I hope ere much longer to see the town of Gisborne supplied with plenty of good wholesome water, both for household purposes as “well as for flushing the streets, as I believe it will tend greatly to diminish the spread of disease ; hut to my mind I fail to see the great good achieved with the mud banks alluded to left to throw out myriads of poisonous germs, nor do I think such water is suitable for watering the streets with ; in fact, I am somewhat sceptical as to healthful benefit in any case. Cooling, certainly, and keeps down dust for a' while, but' ‘l’ Very seriously question if watering streets does the good it is generally supposed to do.—l am, etc., E. V. liUTTREMo
