ALLEGED RACING SWINDLE.

Winstanley, telel_ graph clerk, and John Mowatt, commercial traveller, was opened in the Magis- ’ trate’s Court this morning. 1 Mr Stringer, for the prosecution, stated the facts of the case. It was alleged - that Mowatt had handed in a telegram ■ after a certain race on the second day of i the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter ‘ Meeting, after the race had been run, making a bet with Paterson Bros., Well- . ington, on it. The time received marked on the telegram was 1.43, the advertised time of the starting of the race being 1.45. It was alleged that the time it was actuall put in was 1.55. Paterson Bros., having received certain information, did not pay out. The case is proceeding. A TECHNICAL POINT RAISED. Lateh.— ln the ease against C. E. Win- j Stanley, telegraphist, and John Mouat, commercial traveller, charged with con : spiring to defraud Patterson Bros,, of Wellington, Mr Wilford, for Mouat, objected to the production of the original telegram which was the basis of the alleged swindle, on the ground that the authority : required by the Act had not been signed ' by either Mouat or Patterson Bros. The Bench upheld the objection.
