MR FITZROY DEFEATED FOR HASTINGS MAYORALTY.

Napier, lastfriight. The Mayoral election at Hastings today was keenly contested, both''sides working hard to secure a victory. The present Mayor, Mr W. Y. Dennett, was returned by a majority cf 194 over the ex-Mayor, Mr C. A. Fitzroy. DANGEROUS CROSSING. At the meeting of the Napier Borough Council this evening, a letter was received from Mr A. L. D. Fraser, M.H.R., stating that he had communicated with the Government with reference to tho Council’s petition to have the crossing at Sale street where the recent fatal accident occurred, attended to, and he had received a reply that the matter would receive early attention. PUBLIC LIBRARY. The question of the Council taking over the Athenaeum property with a view to establishing a public library was referred to a library committee. OPEN COMMITTEE. It was resolved that in future the meetings of the Public Works Committee be open to the press.
