A MYSTERIOUS DEATH. [by IELEGBAPH —PItESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, last night. An inquest was opened to-day on tho man James Campbell, who died in the hospital under rather suspicious circumstances. Ho was arrested for drunkenness and window breaking, but becoming ill he was removed to the hospital. He was found to be suffering from acute peritonitis. Ho never rallied, and died this morning. Ho made a statement that ho had had a few drinks, and had been knelt on, but did not say by whom. The inquest was ajourned to enable tho police to investigate. THE LABOR TROUBLES.
Tho Arbitration Court commenced its sittings here to-day. In the butchers’ dispute the President suggests that it might be well to wait till the Wellington evidence was available. The Board, ho said, must be consistent, and unless it were shown that r the conditions wore different, tho wages, of the butchers’ assistants should bo the same in each centre. The millers’'dispute was heard, and the decision reserved till the mills are visited by tho members of the Court. MAN DROWNED. John Stewart, 35 years of age, laborer, a single man, was drowned at Rattraystreet wharf to-night. He had gone down the wharf -with a boy to fish. On returning, the boy, being ahead, heard a splash, and, looking round, missed his companion. He immediately gave tho alarm, and, after dragging, the body was recovered. Whether the man fell or threw himseif in is not known. INCREASE OF WAGES.
The City Council to-night adopted the report of the Tramway Committee, recommending an increase of 5s per week in the wages of all employees, except mechanics. The total cost will be £1,768 per annum. SUNDAY TRAFFIC. A deputation from the Council of Churches waited on the City Council to ask that Sunday tramway traffic be discontinued. It was decided to tako the vote of the ratepayers on the question.
