DEATH OF MR F. SHUGAR

It is with deep regret that wo have to record the death of Mr Frederick Shugdv, a member of the literary staff of our local contemporary. A little over a fortnight ago he was attacked by typhoid fever, and ordered at once to the hospital. Ho was only twenty-four years of age, a man of splendid physique, and it was hoped the attack would be alight one. His condition varied, and yesterday was such as to cause much concern. Towards the evening, lie seemed to have improved, but later on lie completely collapsed, and by nine o’clock his condition was again very serious. At ten o’clock, ho passed away, and thus was closed the earthly career of one who had given great promise of making his mark in journalism. MiShugar was an indefatigable worker, and by deep study and steady application made his way to the front. He was much respected in Pahiatua, from which district he arrived in Gisborne in December last, and those qualities which earned for him the esteem of his fellowmon in other parts, soon gained him many friends in this district. Deep sympathy is felt for the young man’s mother, who but recently visited him in Gisborne, and for whom he was proud to show the warmest affection. A peculiarity of the sad affair is that when Mr Shugar was taken ill he had been keeping resolutely to his work, and on being informed by his medical adviser that he should go to bed at once he completed what work he had in hand, made some purchases, and then went round and hade good-bye to many of his friends, after which he went to the Hospital in a cab.
