LAST NIGHT'S SENSATION.
NEEDLESS ALARM,
Much alarm was caused in Gisborne last by what were thought to be signals of distress from the steamer Waikarc, lying out in the bay. The launch had returned to the wharf after having taken the outward passengers to the Waikarc, and was moored to the wharf. Suddenly an alaim was given from the big steamer, and two bomb° rockets were sent up. People flocked to the beach and about the wharves to gain some information, and the Waihi was soon taken out to enable enquiries to be made as to what had happened. Doctors were asked to be in readiness as it was thought there was some serious accident. On arrival at the Waikarc it was found that some young people who had gone out to the steamer had missed the launch, though the whistle had been twice blown !
