HIS VISIT TO MELBOURNE.

The Hon. Mr Ward interviewed Messrs Drake and Barton on the question of admission of penny letters. He has a further interview to-day to settlo the matter.
At a luncheon in Parliament House Mr Ward, in a speech, said as a matter of fact it could not be said'that public opinion in New Zealand in reference to joining Federation had yet been formed. As far as ho could see, the present policy of the colony was one for watching the development of federation in Australia. He expressed regret at Mr Seddon's unavoidable absence.
Lord Hopctoun entertained Sir Edward Collon, representative of India, Mr Ward, and Mr Peacock at dinner.
GUEST OF THE STOCK EXCHANGE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, May 3. The I-lon. J. G. Ward is the guest of the Stock Exchange to-day. The Chairman, proposing the toast of Mr Ward’s health, referred in kindly terms to New Zealand. Mr Ward, in reply, said that if ill the future Australia found herself with surplus funds for investment in New Zealand, he might look upon the Commonwealth as a happy hunting ground for money instead of going furthor afield.
