John Haughton pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to nine charges of theft, but as there are four charges of perjury to be preferred against him at the Supreme Court, his sentences were left to the higher Court. The Wellington Garrison Band accompanies the Commonwealth Contingent to Melbourne.

Trooper Casey, of the Second Contingent, was convicted at the Magistrate’s Court of a grave assault on a Chinaman, but, in view of his excellent' fighting record, was let off with a fine of £2 and £3 10s costs.

New Plymouth, Thursday.

The Registrar’s returns show that at March 31st there were 234 old age pensions current in Taranaki aud Clifton Counties, 189 being for the full amount, the aggregate being £3,968. Napier, Thursday.

The Star’s Pembroke correspondent wires that a young man, named Moore, had his timber raft wrecked in Lake Wan aka last Friday, and was cast ashore on Pigeon Island, where ho nearly perished. He remained there without food or clothing for thirty-five hours. A heavy shock of earthquake was felt at Arrowtown last night. The Conway case is evidently not intended to como on till towards the end of next week, since Sergeant Griffiths, who had been working up the case here, only left by the express this morning to catch the Monowai at Lyttelton tonight.
