- New York, April 3. William Eice, a millionaire, who died at New York in 19C0, is now alleged to have been murdered. His valet, Jones, has made a confession which states that Bice’s attorney, Patrick, instigated Jones to hold a cloth well saturated with chloroform to Rice’s face for half an hour. Both have been arrested and charged with murder.
London, April 3. A Royal warrant has increased the Commander-in-Chief’s pay to £SOOO. The ringleader of the Kumasi deserters has been shot.
Seven Russian warships have arrived at London. The earthquake that occurred in Southeastern Europe destroyed a lighthouse at Cape Kaliakra. An earthquake occurred in Southeastern Hungary yesterday, and damaged a number of houses. Harris, member for Monmouth, has been unseated on an election petition. Count Von Bulow had an interview with Count Zanardclli, the Italian Premier, at Verona.
The exploring ship Gauss, built for the German expedition'to the Antarctic, was launched at Keil yesterday. An. American Court granted Boer agents a preliminary injunction to restrain the shipment of a cargo of mules from New Orleans to South Africa for the British forces.
Obituary : Mr D’Oyley Carte, the wellknown impressario, whoso name was associated principally with the production of the famous Gilbert and Sullivan operas at the Savoy Theatre.
Washington, April 8. Venezuela demands the American Minister, Mr Loom’s recall. A warship will fetch him home on short leave, President McKinley wishing to consult with him. Looms discovered that General Castro, President of the Venezuelan Republic, after promising to first pay American claims, secretly paid Gorman claims. He also protested against the newspapers’ attack on America.
St. Petersburg, April 3. In the riots at St. Petersburg on March 24th, thirty-five students were killed.
The Czar has ordered a public re-trial of the student Karpovitcli, who was sentenced for shooting M. Bogoliepofl. Sydney, April 4. Dr O’Plaran has been the recipient of hundreds of congratulatory messages, including telegrams from Archbishop Redwood, Dr. Grimes, and the Rev. Father Clery, New Zealand.
Mr Blackmore, Clerk to the South Australian Parliament, has beon appointed Clerk to the Senate ; aud Mr Jenkins, Clerk to the Victorian Assembly, has received a temporary appointment as Clerk of the House. A Chinaman entered the Bank of New South Wales at Toowoomba, flourishing a tomahawk, and seized £3O. He was subsequently captured, after hurling the tomahawk at a constable.
