THE ELECTIONS. By Telegraph—Tress Association—Copyright Sydney, March 28. The election campaign is practically closed. A few candidates are holding meetings to-night, but the final party rallies were held earlier in the week, The Commonwealth has to elect 36 members of the Senate. Thore are 125 nominees to choose from, classified as follows: — Ministerial, 41; Opposition, 50 ; Independent, 16; Labour, 8. For 75 scats in the House IS7 candidates are nominated, thus classified: Ministerialists, 99 ; Opposition, 63 ; Independent, 12 ; Labor, 13. Preparations are complete for a great vote to-morrow, when the states of Now South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and Westralia select representatives for both

the Senate and House of Representatives. The election in Queensland and South Australia is to take place on tho following day. The campaign throughout has been marked by quiet, steady, earnest work by all parties, and an absence of petty bickering, candidates and voters alike being fully seized with tho momentous nationmaking issue at stake. Mr Reid, through the press, issued a last word of appeal on behalf of freetrade. Ho urges the electors to rally round the standard of liberty. The Freetraders tonight are holding a demonstration in the Exhibition building, and the Protectionists in Moore street; otherwise, tho city is very quiet, and there is little to indicate to-morrow’s great event.
