MR DUNCAN ON TOUR, [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The Minister for Lands intends to leave on Monday on a visit to the country north of Napier, thus completing his tour of the North Island. OUR SOLDIERS. The Premier has received a cable from Johannesburg that five officers and seventeen men of the Fourth Contingent have volunteered for further service. POLO TOURNAMENT.

In the polo tournament to-day Hawke’s Bay defeated Hawera by fifteen goals to eight. DANGEROUSLY ILL. Private Best, of the Fourth Contingent, is dangerously ill from enteric fever at Potchefstrooni. BHRGLARY. The promises of Townsend and Paul, auctioneers, were entered last night. The safe was broken'open, and the contents, gold, notes, and silver, wero removed. GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENTS. The Government have appointed Mr F. Feddersou a member of tho Westport Harbor Board ; Jas. Blythe to the Geraldine Licensing Committee ; Captain Reid, and Messrs Schofield and Ilolgate as a Military Examination Board for Auckland; and Messrs J. W. Marchant, M. Carkeek, G. F. Richardson, and A. O’Donahoo to be a Board of Examiners under the Surveyors’ Institute Act.

CANCER AND CONSUMPTION. During the last month there were fourteen deaths from cancer in the colony, and the same number from tubercular diseases. : " RETURNING OFFICER. Borgt, Challis, who disembarked from one of the troopships at Hobart, suffering from enteric fever, has recovered, and leaves for New Zealand by the Monowai on Saturday.
