LIBERAL CHINESE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. At the fruit market this morning one salesman asked the Chinese dealers to subscribe to the Queen’s Statue Fund. There was an immediate response, and amounts were given totalling .£23 Bs. LIGHT BREAD. A baker was to-day fined 20s and costs for selling light-weight bread. Of several loaves weighed by the Inspector, none were under 6oz short. DEATH AT AN ASYLUM.

An inquest was held at the Mount View Asylum to-day on the body of Albert George Harris, formerly a waiter, who died at’the institution on the previous day. Deceased had of late developed acute mania, and though most of his time he was in a padded room he managed to break three’ ribs. The doctor only discovered this two or three days afterwards. Careful inquiry had, however, failed to disclose any violence on the part of the attendants, and the man himself, at sane intervals, never complained. A verdict of death from suppurative pleurisy was returned. THE CORNWALLS. Mr Holmes, Government Commissioner, went South to-night to confer with the local authorities in regard, to the reception of the Cornwalls. PJLO TOURNAMENT. At the polo tournament, in the senior final round for the Saville Cup, Rangitikei beat Hawke’s Bay’ by three to two. In the handicap cup Wellington beat Christchurch by eight to seven. CARD DESIGNS. In connection with the premium of .£ls 15s being offered by the Government for the best design of invitation cards in connection with the Royal visit, five guineas will be given for a set design and the next in order of merit, and two guineas each for six more meritorious designs. ROBIN’S RETURN. Major Robin has cabled to the Premier that he is returning with the Third Contingent from South Africa.
