THE SUPPOSED WRECK.
OWNERS MORE HOPEFUL,
By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyrigh Melbourne, March 27. The owners of the steamer Federal are to-day more hopeful that she may have weathered the storm. Mr McEachern said that, in any case, he was firmly convinced she had not founderod. If lost, his opinion was that she either struck land and went down or collided with another vessel. Mr Eachern thinks that the discovery of the varnished portion of a taffrail suggests the theory that the Federal collided with another vessel. Finding the gale so furious, he thinks the captain may have attempted to run to a harbor refuge, and, in the fog, lost his course. Mr McEachern will not be surprised to find the steamer ashore somewhere along the coast. Received 1.27 a.m., March 28. Melbourne, March 27.
A steamer arrived from Newcastle reports that on Sunday night those on board saw a fire on the beach at Ram Head, some thirty miles south of Gabo Island. They suggested that if the Federal was wrecked the crew, or some of the crew, got ashore. There are, however, some fishing stations in the vicinity. The following is the latest available list of the Federal’s crew : J. Coull, captain ; A. Henderson, chief officer; P. Reader, second officer; third officer not given; John Hill, chief engineer; R. Spence, second engineer; W. Napier, third engineer; John Colo, fourth engineer; E. Crawley, donkeyman ; A. Goetz, R. Burroughs, C. Tankre, P. Mansell, J. Hockett, Henry Bright, A.B.’s; D. N.
