DEATH OF AN INFANT.

A drowning accident which occurred near Pakirikiri during the week was of a very sad nature. The victim was about 11years of.age, a grandson of Peti Morete. The grandfather had gone eel-fishing ; the child followed to the bank, but- was told to go back, and was thought to have done so by the grandfather. The latter then got into his canoe, which was close to the bank of a stream, and was setting the eel basket. Ho heard a cry, but thought it was the child gleefully going off home. The cry, alas, instead of being one of playful glee was a dying scream, and while the grandfather was at the prow of the canoe arranging the basket, the child was drowning at the stern, almost within reach of the man’s hand, and yet without his knowledge. When he did look round, the child was a corpse, and the body had been carried five or six yards along the stream. The natives are now holding a tangi. The grief of the grandfather is pitiful to behold.
