PACIFIC MAIL

SPEECKLES DEMANDS A SUBSIDY.

By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Sydney 7, March 14. Mr Spreckles had an interview v ith Mr Baiton in reference to tho Oceanic Steamship Company 7. Mr Barton states that no definite proposal was made, but a further interview was arranged. The Sydney Morning Herald, dealing with the question of the proposed subsidy to Mr Spreckles, says if steamship traffic between our ports and San Francisco was large enough to be a matter of any particular concern to us, it was largo enough to pay Mr Spreckles without subsidy. The paper adds that it must not be forgotten that the Ameilcan company enters into competition with ourselves, while in 'the Union Company we have an Australian enterprise possessing considerable claims upon us.
