THE KARANGANAKE TROUBLE.
ALLEGED “ LOAFING.^
MEN TO RETURN TO AVORK.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night.
Mr Hales, Engineer-in-Chief, and Mr Vickerman, District Engineer, visited the tunnel at Ivarangahake, and inspected the works where men only earned between four and five shillings daily. As a result, the men have-been asked to go back to work, with the assurance that they will be treated fairly. Mr Vickerman states that the rate paid is rather' low, but some of the men had "beta loafing in a most barefaced way, and Government will not pay for such loafing. Government, he says, desires to deal fairly with the men, but the rqen must co-operate with those responsible ; otherwise, the present system could not bo maintained. The’men have decided to go back to work at once.'
