PRODUCE REPORT
THE GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONER.
By Telegraph—Press Association
Wellington, last night.
The Government Produce Commissioner in London, in his report dated February Ist, states that the cocksfoot seed market is an unsatisfactory one to follow. It seemed to he very speculative, and an enquirer could hardly have any safe guide as to what prices shipments coming forward from New Zealand would realise.
Regarding hemp, he thinks it a great pity if the flax mills of the colony, were to shut down, as there was every prospect of fairly good prices being obtainable for some tune to come. Producers should, however, try to improve the standard of their output. The meat market continues in much the same state as when he made his last report. The mutton supplies were light, and prices were firm. Lamb was selling in small quantities, but very few New Zealand lots were on sale, the principal offering being from Australia. The lamb trade, says the Commissioner, is rapidly becoming an all - the - year - round one. Complaint had been made that receding prices for beef had been caused Ijy stocks being distributed among competing salesmen, instead of being concentrated in a few hands.
