NATIVE LAND ACT.
ROYAL VISIT

A deputation of Maoris representing tribes south of the Manawatu river, waited on the Premier on Saturday, with a request that the new Acts affecting Native lands, passed last session, should not be made to apply to their lands. The Premier explained the general effects of tho legislation, and promised that the Natives should be given the option of having their lauds brought under the Acts or not. The reply was considered satisfactorv. The deputation was introduced bv Mr W. H. Field, M.H.R., and Ropata To Ao acted as spokesman. There were also present: Hinikamu, Te Hiko, Ranapiri. Roopata, Tataua, Hapi, Puketapu, Mold te Ivotu, and others representing the Ngatiraukawa, Ngatiroa, Ngahawa, and Muaopoto tribes. The deputation asked that they should be allowed to entertain the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, during their approaching visit, at some place up the coast, preferably at Horowhcnua Lake. Tho Premier said that the time at the disposal of their Royal Highnesses would -not be sufficient to allow of any such arrangement being made.
