The Army estimates for 1901-02 total £87,915,000, _ providing for an effective force of 450,000.
PERMANENT ARMY OF 220,000
ENORMOUS CHARGES CAUSED
BY THE WAR. Received 4.37 p.m.j March 3. London, March 2. The Army Estimates provide for a permanent army of 220,000, the remainder of the effective force being regarded as temporary forces due to the war. Tho Estimates include £58,230,000 for war services, with tho cost of reparation and gratuities. Tho Estimates are based upon calculations that the Army in South Africa will bo kept at its full strength until the beginning of August, and that it will then he gradually diminished. The increase of £414,000 for permanent services include a quarter of a million for the militia reserve. Tho sum of £150,000 is for a new system of consolidated bounties. Substantial provision is made for tho re-organisation of tho Army Medical Departments, and for pensions to tho widows and children of those who have died as tho result of active operations.
