THE IMPERIAL TROOPS.
WANGANUI’S RECEPTION.
Per Press Association—Copyright. Wanganui, last night. Wanganui rose to the occasion and gave.' the Imperial troops under Major Askwith a splendid reception. Tho function took place on the picturesque racecourse, whicfi was crammed by thousands of enthusiastic sightseers, The troops detrained at the crossing near the courge, and marched straight over. The ceremony in front of the grandstand was very impressive. Addresses were delivered by the Mayor, Mr Hatrick, and the Hon. J. G. Ward, and Major Topia, an old Maori chief. The visitors were entertamed at afternoon tea, and after mingling with the crowd fell in and marched to the Drill Hall, from where they were dismissed, and taken to the various places arranged for billeting them. The streets to-night are' filled with soldiers, the business places being lit up as on Saturday night. Some 300 Maoris danced a haka, war dances, and poi dances, and Major Topia on then behalf, presented Colonel Wyndbam, through Major Askwith, with a valuable Maori mat and huia feathers. The troops leave for Wellington at 8.30 to-morrow morning, stopping at Palmerston en route.
