General Synod.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Napier, last night. At the General Synod to-day, the business was almost purely formal. The report of the Committee on the amendment of the canon for the trial of Bishops was received, and the report of the Melanesian Mission was referred to the Missions Committee. The rest of the afternoon session was occupied in sanctioning the lease, sale or exchange of Church lands at Eltham, Wellington, Masterton, and Hamilton. At the evening session, on the bill moved by the Bishop of Waiapu, in reference to the authority of the Bishops being required for alterations in Church fabrics and utensils, the motion was'strongly opposed by some speakers, on' the ground tfiat in a democratic country like New Zealand, it was intended by the early founders of the Church of New Zealand to place as little temporal power in the hands of bishops as possible, such duty being leftto the trustees pf the diocese. The bill was thrpwo out so the second reading,
