ROWING.
0; ■ A GRAND RACE.
Two races for Mr Oatridge’s trophies were rowed off last night by Poverty Bay Rowing Club crews. The first race was — G. Brown and C. Taylor v. J. Parker and H. Taylor, both starting from lOsec allowance. This was the grandest race ever seen on the river. . Both crews moved off evenly; at the bridge Parker had a lead of haif a length, but Taylor made up the difference by the time Barton’s jetty was reached. Then they pulled together, each in turn getting a lead of about a foot, and pulling their hardest and making an extraordinarily plucky fight for victory. There was great cheering as the boats, with even noses, neared the winning post. In the last stroke Brown got a lead of a couple of feet, and thus won a grand and exciting race.
The other race was —B. Boyle and J. Pool (lOsec) v. C. Kirk and G. Blair (15sec). The latter crew lacked training, but made a good race of it. They were caught at the footbridge; but gamely kept up the pace, and they were only beaten by half a length.
