SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL RECITAL. Loveus of sacred music were afforded a great treat at St. Mary’s Catholic Church last evening, when a most successful recital of sacred music was given by members of the choir and several visitors, under tho able supervision of Mr G. Palairet. After an organ solo by Mr Paiairet, played in splendid style, Mr Bedford (of Auckland) sang with much success “ The Holy City,” which was well received. Miss Carrie Knight, a well-known singer in the northern city, sang in a pleasing manner “ The Soul’s Awaking” (Haddock). She possesses a sweet soprano .voice of great power and range, and her singing was much admired. Later in the evening she contributed Millard’s “ Ave Maria” with equal success. Mr Barlow sang “ The Pilgrim” (Adams) and Shine,” from “ Elijah.” He was a little bit unsteady in the first number, but was heard to distinct advantage in the second item, which he did full justice to. The Misses Sobers were down for a violin duet, and gave a delightful rendering of Mascagni’s “Ave Maria.’-’ Miss Morris, of Dunedin, then sang with great feeling Mendelsohn’s sacred aria “Jerusalem, thou that killed the prophets," and Miss McGuirk gave an excellent interpretation of “ Queen of Angels," both Hems being much appreciated bv the large congregation. Mr Parker’s ’cello solo was another attractive selection, and was given in good style. Miss Flynn’s interpretation of the favorite song “ Rest ” was one of tho gems of the evening. The young lady sang with much feeliDg, and held the close attention of the audience throughout, the item being much appreciated. Mrs Orr was in excellent voice, and her rendering of “Holy Shrine,” with ’cello obligato by Mr Parker, was all that could be desired. Costa’s “ Morning Prayer ” was tastefully rendered by Mrs Palairet, and an excellent recital ended with the singing of the National Anthem by the choir. Mr Palairet presided at the organ, and as promoter of the recital is deserving of special commendation for the full measure of success attained, all present agreeing that it was one of the most successful musical evenings given in Gisborne for some time past.
