At a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals it was decided that subscription lists be opened in Wanganui. Palmerston North, and in Hawke’s Bay, in order to widen the scope of the society’s sphere of action, so as to include the districts mentioned.

The recest committee of the University Senate meet at Dunedin on Thursday for the compilation of matriculation and junior scholarships., the results of which will probably be announced on the following Monday or Tuesday. A delay of a few days has been caused by the re-arrangement of the French examination, consequent on the death of Professor Clarke. Sir James Hector, Chancellor of the University, left for Dunedin to-night. An escapee from the Burnham Industrial School, who had stowed away on a steamer from Lyttelton, was brought before the S.M. to-day and ordered to be sent back to the institution and whipped with a birch. The youngster was subsequently placed in one of the cells at the police station, but wriggled through an aperture U3ed for passing food to inmates, and quickly vanished. Daring to-day £llO was collected in the city towards the fund for giving the Sixth Contingent a suitable farewell.
