NEW HEBRIDES TROUBLE.
DEPUTATION TO THE HON. ME BAETON.
SEEIOUS ALLEGATIONS. ANNEXATION SUGGESTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, Jan. 22. A' deputation of the New Hebrides Mission Synod waited on the Hon. Mr Barton, as Minister for External Affairs. A statement of tbeir case was read. They accused the French of maladmistration with reference to land dealing with the natives. The Eev. Mr Patton declared that if the French claims were admitted a large part of the New Hebrides would already belong to them. The Eev. Small declares that Capt. Eichy of the Eingarooma, as Chairman of-a mixed Commission, had done all in his power to depress and retard British interests in the islands.
The deputation wisoed the Government to appoint some authority to investigate the land claims. A Joint Commission could not govern the islands. What was wanted was annexation by Great Britain.' Mr Barton, in reply, promised to give very serious consideration to the statements made. He considered it bis duty to make representations on the matter to the Secretary for the Colonies. :
