CABLE FROM THE PREMIER.
THE SIXTH CONTINGENT. MAORI RECEPTION TO THE DUKE OF YORK. Wellington, last night. The City Council has appointed a committee to consider the question of immediately establishing public abattoirs, their report to be presented within fourteen days. The Hon. Mr Ward, Acting-Premier, has received a cablo from the Hon. Mr Seddon, who is now at Brisbane, stating that the Now Zealand contingent reoeived a great reception on the steamer Orient yesterday. .The steamer sailed again at noon to-day. Tho Premier says that he goes back to Sydney on Saturday, thence to Melbourne, en route for the Bluff.
The form of oath taken by the members of the Sixth Contingent declares that they will serve within and without tho colony until they are lawfully discharged. A number of representative Maoris waited on the Hon. Mr Ward, to-day and made proposals for giving a great Native welcome to tho Duke of York on his arrival in the colony. The Natives propose that war canoes shall be brought to Wellington, and that tho leading chiefs shall welcome His Highness in approved Maori fashion. MrWard promised to put the matter before the authorities who arc arranging the details of the Royal visit.
