London, Jan 12. The Daily Tolegraph states that Great Britain declined to ratify tho Hay-Pauncefoto treaty until the claim of an English shipping company holding the monopoly to traffic the Sangui river till 1927 had been satisfied.
The company is willing to sell its rights for fifty million dollars. Senator J. T. Morgan, chairman of the Select Committee on the construction of the Nicaragua canal, admits the validity of the claim, which blocks canal legislation. The Duke of York visits Colombo.
Jan. 13.—The Stock Exchange losses through the Lake View gamble exceed anticipations, one firm’s deficiencies alone being nearly a million, and another half a million.
