BATTERED TUG TOWED TO PORT: HURRICANE TOLL
(10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 6. The Coast Guard reported today that the small tug Cherokee, battered by a hurricane for two days, reached harbour safely at St. Petersburg, Florida. ,
With a crew of 10 the vessel, which was reported missing yesterday, was towed in by a Coast Guard cutter after its rudder broke during what Miami Weather Bureau classified as the worst storm ever to hit the north end of Florida’s gulf coast. The hurricane caused great damage at Cedar Keys where 500 people whose homes were cither demolished or badly damaged are living at a schoolhouse.
The county health officer has appealed for a Red Cross unit and other assistance. The hurricane, with 125 miles an hour force washed gigantic tides against 100 miles of the gulf coast from Tampa to Cedar Keys. Damage at St. Petersburg alone was estimated at 1,000,000 dollars
