Railway Clerks Fined For Bookmaking
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 7 It was Imprudent of the accused to have apparently burnt evidence relating to the extent of his activities, as his action was inclined to make the case appear worse than It might be, said Mr. W. A. Harlow. S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court yesterday when fining Donald McElhinney, aged 27, single, railway clerk. Gore. £ioo and costs on a charge of bookmaking.
McElhinney pleaded guilty. It was stated by the police that bebore the accused admitted them to the premises he was seen to burn a wad of papers in a fire which were presumably betting materials as no such materials were found.
James Alexander Donaldson, aged 27. married a railway clerk at Mataura, who pleaded guilty to a similar offence, was fined £75 and costs.
